Learn Friulian free online: start here

On In vuaite sui cunfins (On guard at the borders), you will learn the Friulian language. Friulian is a lesser-known Romance language spoken by some half-million people in the north-east of Italy. It exists in a standard form alongside three main colloquial dialects (central, western and northern), with each dialect possessing different local variants associated with a village. On this website, you will learn not only the standard form of Friulian, but also the variant spoken at Dograva di San Zors da la Richinvelda (known in Italian as Aurava di San Giorgio della Richinvelda), which falls under the western dialect of the Friulian language.

If you are a complete beginner in Friulian, (1) study the Friulian lessons for beginners, which provide you with the necessary grounding in the language. Follow the outbound links in the introduction to hear Friulian read aloud by 1127 different speakers. (2) You will find a great deal of supplementary Friulian learning material in the addendum, including videoclips with transcriptions, vocabulary lists, news reports and detailed grammar and pronunciation notes. (3) Once you have worked through this material, familiarise yourself with a local variant of Friulian, namely the Friulian variant spoken at Dograva di San Zors da la Richinvelda, known in Italian as Aurava di San Giorgio della Richinvelda. (4) You will then be able to read short stories composed in the Dograva variant of Friulian. (5) You are invited to read my working translation into Friulian of De imitazion di Crist, as well as the Compendi de dutrine cristiane. (6) Finally, work your way through the blog posts to learn more Friulian: browse the monthly archive in the sidebar, or see all material posted in the year 2025.

I am Roberto Polesello, from Montreal. On my Friulian line, my family originates at Dograva. Please make a monetary donation: the donation method is through PayPal, and no account is needed.
