He is a forty-one-year-old Triestrine man, apprehended by the Padova carabinîrs last night inside his girlfriend’s house, following searches conducted for at least two days across Veneto, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The man offered no resistance and told the officers he had killed the pensioner. The victim’s body had been found sealed inside two bags hidden in a wardrobe two days ago, in his home in Limena, in the province of Padova. Based on his account, it all started with an argument between the two men, who were living in the same residence. The medical examiner’s findings indicated that the killer had acted with ferocity, breaking the victim’s neck.

Head-on collision in Daviàn due to a sozzled drunk driver: A head-on collision occurred yesterday at about one twenty in the afternoon between a Honda, one of those used by Google Maps to take photographs of the area, and a Fiat coming from the opposite direction. While navigating a curve, the driver of the Honda veered into the other lane, striking the car driven by a seventy-seven-year-old man head-on; after the impact, the Fiat crashed into the low wall alongside the road. The driver was trapped inside, requiring firemen and paramedics to arrive immediately to extricate him, after which he was taken to the hospital in Pordenon. The driver of the Google Car, a thirty-eight-year-old man from Fontanefrede who was not working at the time, was unharmed, but when the carabinîrs performed a breathalyser test, they found he was positive with alcohol levels three times above the legal limit. The man was so drunk that he even began urinating in front of the carabinîrs. For the sozzled drunk driver, licence revoked and criminal complaint.

Another episode of violence, where a drunkard turned arsonist threw a brick at a pharmacy window, and then set fire to fever-reducing suppositories. A little old man who was passing that way was hit by shards of glass, but he was not hurt. The eighty-four-year-old man told us: “And so I said to this ’ere fella, you don’t gotta heat suppositories up first.” After the incident, the thirty-year-old drunk reportedly tried to flee, but the little old man’s wife, a spright lady despite her eighty-three years, had come out of the pharmacy to stop the offender with her cane until law enforcement arrived. The policemen had their hands full: the offender, so drunk that he had turned to vinegar, was acting like a madman and lashing out at the officers. When they managed to subdue him and take him away, the elderly lady, fed up with the situation, clapped her hands. / r.p.

The heat arrives and arsonists go into action on the Karst: Two interventions, one after the other, for the firemen of Mugle and Opicina. At about two in the afternoon, a team of firemen from Mugle intervened along an unpaved road to extinguish a fire. As soon as they arrived, the firemen immediately put out the flames, thus managing to stop them before they reached the forest, and then cleared the entire zone. Another intervention was carried out by a team of firemen from Opicina along the highway, also there because a fire had started in the brushwood. The fact that the alarm had been raised immediately, together with the quick arrival of the firemen, allowed for extinguishing the fires before they might reach the forest. It seems nonetheless strange that these fires should have started due to the heat, which is not intense enough, and there could be some arsonists at work, as has happened in past years.

Friulian vocabulary

  • il cjalt, the heat

  • une strade blancje, an unpaved road
  • distudâ un fûc, to extinguish a fire

Sul Cjars: on the Karst {plateau}. This is a plateau region extending across the Slovene-Italian border.

Une strade blancje: This is an unpaved road, in opposition to a paved one, which, in Friulian, is: l’asfalt. The unpaved road may be surfaced by gravel or dirt, lighter coloured than asphalt, as can be seen in the image below, whence the term: strade blancje (literally, ‘white road’). Example: Par rivâ tal asfalt nus tocje fâ un chilometri di strade blancje (to get to the paved road, we have to go along one kilometre of unpaved {gravel, dirt} road). For information: If we were to say this same example sentence in the Dograva variant of Friulian, we obtain: Par rivâ tal asfalt a ni toça fâ un chilometro di strada blança.

Distudâ: to extinguish, to put out. Also: studâ. Examples: i pompîrs a àn distudât il fûc (the firemen have put out the fire); distudâ un spagnolet, distudâ un sigaret (to put out a cigarette); distudâ la lûs (to turn off the light); distudâ il motôr (to turn off the motor).

With her car down a ravine in Polcenic, saved by Alpine Rescue technicians: A fifty-two-year-old woman went off the road this morning, at about eleven, in Mezamont di Polcenic. The woman, who lives in the area, was driving along an unpaved road when she lost control of her car, going down more than fifteen metres into a ravine, then coming to a precariously balanced stop against a tree. The woman was unharmed, though she was panic-stricken when the fire brigade arrived at the scene. They bound the vehicle with steel cables to secure it, before it might go farther down into the abyss. Then the Alpine Rescue technicians went down with ropes to recover the woman. It took two hours in total. Also at the scene was the helicopter rescue team: the woman, after a medical check-up, was taken by ambulance to Pordenon hospital for further evaluation. Carabinîrs were also at the scene.

Friulian vocabulary

  • un sdrup, a ravine
  • lâ fûr strade, to go off the road

  • pierdi il contrôl, to lose control

(1) Lâ fûr {di} strade: to go off the road; here used in a literal sense. Also used figuratively in reference to immoral behaviour, especially in the Bible in Friulian. Example (2): a jerin ducj fûr di strade (literally, they were all off the way, which is to say that they had all gone morally astray). Another example (3): o vin pecjât, o vin fat mâl, o sin lâts fûr di strade (we have sinned, we have done wrong, we have gone off the way {gone morally astray}).

To say the above according to the Dograva variant of Friulian: (1) zî fôr di strada; (2) a erin duçus fôr di strada; (3) i vin peçât, i vin fat mâl, i sin zûts fôr di strada. Zî (to go): the z takes the sound present in English words such as zoo, zap, zero. Some writers prefer to use ’s when this sound appears at the beginning of a word: ’sî, rather than zî. (Either way, zî and ’sî are pronounced alike.) Example: i sin ’sûts fôr da la sitât (we went out of the city). Moreover, some may even drop the t in the writing of the masculine plural past participle, given that it is not pronounced: i sin ’sûs fôr da la sitât.

An elderly man who, early yesterday afternoon, drove his car the wrong way for thirteen kilometres along the highway narrowly avoided causing a serious accident. The man, dressed up as a circus clown, was driving at top speed. The highway police began receiving numerous telephone calls from people telling of an unkempt clown, with a lopsided wig and cigar in his mouth, driving the wrong way in the overtaking lane. Agents promptly blocked traffic as they waited for the clown to be caught by a patrol. In just a few minutes, they managed to pull aside the car, inside of which was the eighty-five-year-old clown; he was in a state of confusion, under the effect of alcoholic substances. A truly pathetic scene: the clown was so sozzled that he even started throwing up in front of the agents. For the elderly clown, for whom it was a miracle if he could stand on his feet, immediate revocation of his driving licence and a hefty fine. / r.p.

Tractor-trailers going wrong way nearly cause tragedy along highway: Two foreign tractor-trailers narrowly avoided causing a serious accident when, for reasons still unclear, they entered the Tarvis highway exit junction in the wrong direction. Immediately afterwards, with a series of risky manoeuvres, they turned back to the correct direction but endangered their own safety and that of many people on the road. Thanks to numerous reports and alerts from safety sensors along the highway network, the traffic police operations centre quickly located the two vehicles, which were stopped by patrols near a parking area. For the two drivers, immediate revocation of their driving licence, tractor-trailers impounded for three months and heavy fines.

Flames and chaos in a prison: Late yesterday afternoon, a prisoner started a fire in his cell, using pillowcases and a pair of underwear belonging to his cellmate. The blaze was extinguished by three prison police officers who, due to smoke inhalation, had to be taken to hospital. A fourth officer was also hospitalised due to a violent headbutt and punch to the eye. The prisoner is a thirty-eight-year-old man, incarcerated for his actions against regional school buses: for the sheer pleasure of causing trouble, he had a habit of cutting them off while riding his motorcycle. Due to these psychopathic actions, bus drivers were often forced to make manoeuvres to avoid colliding with him, endangering not only themselves but also the pupils. One of the prison police officers said: “The situation today was as dangerous as it was absurd.” The prisoner has ended up in an isolation cell on account of his incendiary behaviour. / r.p.

Just a few hours earlier, the offender had beaten two youths in Primo Maggio Square. Additional reports came in from San Domenico, at the Parco di Cemento. Though the man was required to observe a prohibition on his staying in Udin, his violent actions continued, such that a custodial order was issued, allowing policemen to take him in.

The accident that occurred this morning at about nine thirty was so terrible, that the driver of a Honda, hit by a Renault, died. Due to the impact, the Honda overturned, landing upside down in front of a cemetery, right under the eyes of an elderly woman holding a bouquet of flowers. It seems the driver of the Renault, drunk out of his wits, abandoned his girlfriend, who had been injured in the passenger seat; he fled on foot, limping and tripping numerous times, without even checking on the driver in the other car. At the scene arrived paramedics and firemen, who worked at length and with great care to remove the Honda driver, a forty-two-year-old man, from the car. He was rushed to hospital under code red; unfortunately, he died in the operating theatre. As for the twenty-four-year-old woman who remained injured in the car, she is not in life-threatening condition. She too was so drunk that she even began to argue with the cars airbags and to warn of the accident with smoke signals using a lit cigarette. The barking of a puppy caught the attention of the firemen; the poor little animal, four-legged friend of the dead driver, was inside the Honda at the time of the impact: the firemen left it in the hands of veterinary rescue volunteers. The elderly woman holding the bouquet of flowers said: “The world has gone mad, drunk like that at nine in the morning. You can’t even go visit your husband at the cemetery.” / r.p.

The operations room of the Pordenon fire brigade was therefore alerted and sent a team to the scene. Firemen immediately found the poor little animal, by then nearly out of strength and unable to climb out of the water. Two firemen managed to go down into the canal and retrieve it, then left it in the hands of veterinary rescue volunteers. Yesterday evening, at about eight thirty, a house in Udin caught fire due to a lightning bolt. The bolt hit the roof, which was largely destroyed. At the time, there was a sixty-year-old man inside the two-storey house. Fortunately, the man escaped in time without sustaining injuries; however, after seeing the house on fire, a twenty-five-year-old driver lost control of his car, zigzagging on the road. He hit a gate and ended up getting stuck in the garden of a house not far from the fire. Due to the accident, the driver was ejected, but got crushed under the car which had overturned. Not only did firemen succeed in preventing the flames from spreading to the roof of the neighbouring house, but they also worked with the jaws of life to free the driver. Once the fire had been extinguished and the driver put on a stretcher and taken immediately to hospital, the firemen undertook a clean-up of the unfortunate area, completed late in the night. / r.p.

Murder in Bicinins, woman kills friend by stabbing with scissors: A murder took place yesterday evening in Bicinins, where a 42-year-old woman, a resident of Reane dal Roiâl, killed a 42-year-old friend by stabbing him with scissors. During an argument inside the man’s home at about 21.30, the woman allegedly used scissors first and then muriatic acid. The woman then called the carabinîrs, confessing to having killed the man. Arrested late last night, the woman did not clarify to the carabinîrs what her relationship to the man was, partly because she was in a state of confusion. The reasons for the murder are unknown; the carabinîrs are investigating. The house where the incident occurred has been placed under sequestration.

The woman who killed a man in Bicinins seems to have provided a new version of what happened: “When I stabbed him, he was already dead. Maybe a cardiac arrest caused by a methadone overdose.” This account was shared while speaking with her trusted lawyer, who spoke to journalists. “First he was making strange noises, then when I stabbed him, his heart had already stopped beating,” she reportedly added. When the carabinîrs arrived at the house of the crime, the woman, who has been in treatment for drug problems for years, said that it was Satan who had ordered her to kill the man. An autopsy will now need to be performed. The hearing to validate the arrest is already scheduled for tomorrow.

This morning at about half past ten a Fiat and a tractor with its trailer collided in Sedean. The driver of the car, trapped inside, was injured. The firemen had to intervene.

Understanding the Friulian

E mieze: Used when telling time to refer to the half hour. The z in this word represents the soft g sound (miege), like that of the g in the English word gentle. Examples: tor nûf e mieze (at about half past nine); tor vot e mieze (at about half past eight); spietâ fin siet e mieze (to wait until half past seven).

Un rimorchi: This is a trailer. Example: un tratôr agricul cun rimorchi (a farm tractor with a trailer). This word was encountered recently, when you read a Friulian definition of a TIR, in the matter of contraband cigarettes.

Dâsi cuintri: to collide. Examples: si son dâts cuintri une machine e un tratôr (a car and a tractor have collided); si son dâts cuintri doi camions (two lorries/trucks have collided).

Read another sentence in Friulian: Se il vuidadôr di une machine (if the driver of a car) al è restât blocât dentri (has remained trapped inside), i pompîrs a scuegnin lavorâ (the firemen must work) cu lis cisoris idraulichis (with the jaws of life) par liberâlu (to free him).

The two Turkish drivers were travelling to Belgium and the Netherlands.

Swallows under protection, do not touch their nests: The Pordenon municipal councillor with responsibilities for animal welfare has issued an appeal in favour of swallows to prevent their nests from being destroyed. She has invited citizens to report those who destroy swallow nests, emphasising that such actions are a crime, with those responsible potentially facing charges of damage, mistreatment, and even killing of animals. The appeal comes after numerous reports according to which some people do not want the nests in the city. This is above all about controlling the situation in certain condominiums and houses, where some individuals, to avoid having to deal with a bit of mess, try to drive away the swallows, vital for the ecosystem, with reckless behaviour. This year, based on the latest census, it seems that a few more swallows have returned, with fifteen nests counted compared to four last year, although just five years ago, there were over forty nests.

Two vehicles in flames, in Vilès and Daviàn: The fire brigade had their hands full this morning due to two vehicles catching fire, a van and a truck. The first incident occurred in Vilès along the A34 highway: the driver noticed that his vehicle was catching fire and immediately pulled over to the side of the road, then called for help. When the firemen arrived, the van was completely engulfed in flames, which were also catching in the roadside vegetation. Shortly after, at about a quarter to nine in Daviàn, along the road towards Plancjaval, a truck caught fire. As he was going uphill on the road, the driver noticed smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. After parking the truck on the side of the road and getting out with another co-worker, the driver immediately requested assistance, while the other man tried to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher, but with little success. When the Pordenon firemen arrived, the entire truck cabin was already engulfed in flames, partly due to a diesel leak that was flowing onto the asphalt and had reached the nearby woods. The firemen, with the help of a water tanker, managed to extinguish the fire, stopping the flames before they could catch in the forest.

A truly unusual piece of news: in Pordenon, there was a man who, while driving his car, would cut off ambulances, just for the pleasure of causing them annoyance. Ambulance drivers were often forced to make sudden manoeuvres to avoid colliding with him, putting not only the paramedics but also the patients inside the ambulances at risk. The good news is that the man has been caught and identified by the carabinîrs: he’s a forty-three-year-old man, already known to law enforcement. During a search of his car, items used to dazzle were found, such as a laser pointer, along with telephones containing videoclips of his acts. The man has been charged with interruption of public service and private violence.

Read an Italian and Friulian version side by side: see number 6.

Read a text related to self-defence in Friulian

Self-defence: How can we know if we’re dealing with a fighter? Four elements to consider.

Were arguing with someone and the situations escalating: it may even be that we come to blows in a fist fight. Have we a fighter in front of us? Should we confront this person? First element: To determine if we’re dealing with a dangerous opponent, which is to say, a fighter, we must first observe his posture, especially his knees: are they bent? If a man is a skilled fighter, he won’t stand rigidly on his feet, and his legs won’t be like two trunks; on the contrary, his knees will be bent, and the fighter will be mobile and flexible, to be able to dodge the opponent and take punches or shoves with stability. Bent knees are an alarm bell that we’re facing a fighter. Second element: the shoulders. A fighter won’t keep his shoulders low; instead, they’ll be slightly raised, so as to come to the defence of his chin. This higher shoulder position allows the fighter to throw punches more skillfully: such a fighter has self-defence in his DNA. Third element: The fighter will protect his chin. It’s unlikely that a man who challenges you with his chin held high is a fighter. A fighter knows well that the chin is a very sensitive target, so he’ll keep it low. Additionally, a fighter won’t look down at you from above, but will look up at you from below. This way of looking signals to you a situation of danger: with this glance, the fighters sending you a clear message. Fourth element: the man’s physical condition — developed neck, flattened or crooked nose, cauliflower ears. These traits come from many hours of training. As for cauliflower ears, they result from the many blows that deform the ear’s cartilage.
