This is the twenty-fourth lesson in our study of the Friulian language using the book Lis predicjis dal muini, written by Josef Marchet. Follow the links in Friulian 1 to read the book and listen to its full audio version, available online courtesy of the Societât Filologjiche Furlane. The commentary below relates to the first two paragraphs of Lis litaniis, which begin with mi consoli and end with une parsore la altre.
COMMENTARY ON THE FRIULIAN
Lis litaniis: paragraph 1, sentence 1.
Vocabulary: consolâsi (to be consoled); viodi (to see); cuatri (four); cinc (five); un fantat (lad); di plui dal solit (more than usual); usgnot (tonight); preâ (to pray); il rosari (rosary).
Mi consoli: I am consoled. Listen to how the speaker interpreting Vigji pronounces consoli in the recording; on in the first syllable takes on the nasalised quality of ong. The present indicative conjugation of consolâsi is as follows: mi consoli, ti tu consolis, si console, si consolìn, si consolais, si consolin. Whereas the singular reflexive pronouns are mi, ti, si, the plural ones are si for all: verb endings make clear which person is in question. Take care to differentiate between first-person plural si consolìn and third-person plural si consolin, as the tonic stress shifts: si con-so-lìn (first-person plural), si con-sò-lin (third-person plural). Mi consoli a viodi: I am consoled to see. Cuatri, cinc fantats di plui dal solit: four or five more lads than usual. Masculine plural fantats is pronounced fantàs. Of di plui dal solit, another example: dîs, undis parochians di plui dal solit (ten or eleven more parishioners than usual). Usgnot means tonight; as for last night, one way to say it in Friulian is with orsere, used numerous times by Vigji in his sermons. Preâ rosari: to pray the rosary.
